The part with the POW block underground I think was just Mario throwing the POW block, and the block enlarging momentarily upon impact. It did that in New Super Mario Bros. Wii as well.
This game looks great though, and I absolutely love the backgrounds.

Nice job Josh, but I don’t think you should stop at screenshots. Maybe (if you have enough time, I realize you’re just one man) you could anylise trailers.
