Red Steel 2 – Answers to Community (Jan. 15th)

Every Friday on Ubisoft’s official Red Steel 2 forum the good people working on Red Steel 2 will be taking time out to answers fan’s questions about the game. This week Jason Vandenberghe (Creative Director) has answered a couple questions regarding the game’s setting. It’s exciting to learn of some new areas the game will take place. If you’re like me I’m sure you can’t wait to slice up some foes in the ancient temples!

Below is the Q&A that Ubisoft has posted this week. If you have a question you would like to ask the team head over to their forums and ask away! If you want to stay even more up to date on the upcoming release of Red Steel 2 you can also follow Aymeric Evennou’s “UbiLeak” Twitter account.

Is Caldera the whole land and not just the city?

This might get a little strange, so fasten your seatbelt. J Let’s talk about the world of Red Steel 2 a little.

Caldera is a city in what is generally known as the “Nevada Territories”. It’s kinda northwest of Las Vegas, off the beaten path a bit, in what’s affectionately known as the “High Desert” (a.k.a. the Mojave Desert) – an elevated, hot, flat, chunk of the Rocky Mountains.

The land surrounding Caldera is named “Caldera County” as well – one can imagine that they were a bit low on ideas for names when they settled the area, and the big frickin’ crater was the most interesting landmark (a “caldera”, for the curious, is another word for a big sinkhole or crater).

So, no, Caldera isn’t the whole land (by which I think you mean “the world”? if not, let me know). The “world” of Red Steel 2 is the Red West.

In fact, “the Red West” is a phrase used to describe the whole western part of North America… although we haven’t been talking about that kind of thing very much. It’s a name that was earned during the period before and during World War II (which went a little bit differently ‘there’ than it did ‘here’)… but I’ve also been using it as the “world” name for Red Steel 2.

Will there be other places than desert in the game?

But of course. The whole story takes place in and around the city of Caldera, and there’s a lot of different kinds of environments in that place. Ancient temples, ramshackle slums, desert, huge modern freight-moving systems… it’s a real city. Then you’ll roll on out into surrounding canyons, where you’ll find a pueblo-style mining town, a huge semi-automated strip mine, old, abandoned underground tunnels, an ancient ancestral monastery / temple clinging to the side of a cliff…

Yep. But if you mean “do you go anywhere cold, like the moon or something” the answer is no.

Will there be any Easter eggs?

Has there ever been a video game that shipped without an Easter egg or two? I don’t think there has.

  1. looks pretty interesting might get it

    1. We’ll be covering the game this March. REALLY hope a lot of Wii gamers pick it up.

Kick ass visuals, Full Motion Plus controls, long time in development. Really can’t go wrong. :)

  2. Chosenoneknuckles

Can’t wait for my pre-ordered copy on March 9th!

  3. That sure was a lot of questions.. D: Though it was quite interesting. Looking forward to it :]

  4. I’m gonna give my enemies a full load of ninja ass-whoopin’!

  5. Will there be any multiplayer in the game? The first game had awesome multiplayer!

    1. Sadly no multiplayer.
Darn shame too, could have been the best FPS on Wii multiplayer wise if they included split-screen and online.
      Oh well.
Not like Online could work with the sloppy (imo) sword mechanic.

Sorry, but I’d rather hold a button and then move my arm to use the sword, not randomly swing.

      1. I don’t see how exactly it’s a sloppy sword system when it pick up your precise movements and the game takes that into consideration for different moves and attacks. Trust me, from everything I have seen, you wont be, “randomly swinging”. Also, in order to use certain moves, you need to use the proper motions in combination with buttons, so what you are proposing wouldn’t work. Now, I’m not exactly passing judgment on it until I play it, but I don’t see anything sloppy about it thus far.

  6. can’t wait

  7. do this game have blood? I may sound like a sissy nanny but I dont really like blood games

    1. er, yes and no. If you look closely in some of the later vids, you can see small amounts of red stuff coming of the enemies when they are hit. However, it’s vary mild and hardly noticeable unless someone points it out. It’s not like No More Heroes or Mad World if that’s what you are asking about, not even close to that territory.

    2. The game does not feature blood or gore. The reason being they want the player to feel like a hero who is taking down really evil bad guys. If there’s blood and guts flying all over the place you are less of a hero and just more of a crazy villain yourself.

That being said you still have a red slash being made on the screen which in a way gives the illusion of blood. You can STAB enemies too, which I’m sure feels really great.

      1. It sure looks like blood to me, all be it in a VARY slim amount. Trust me, I paused the vids and everything. I have a tendency to notice or pick up on things others don’t see. the way in which the “red slashes” look and how they animate in correlation with the way the sword hits makes it look like some blood is being spilled. Of course, it could all be an illusion, like some kind of middle ground because there are people who complain that there is no blood in this game.

    3. nether do i to tell u the truth… lets hope not

  8. Josh, you know about that “zero suit bonus video” you were gonna make. you havent canceld it, right? i wanna see a hot lady in that. xD. and if you HAVE canceld it, dont you think it was a waste of ALOT of money to get that suit?

  9. Oh! and i want to thank Psymaster7 and you Josh for answering on my question.

  10. I take back what I said about the zero suit video. I just read on Twitter that you’re gonna film it this weekend! cant wait!! :D

  11. I’m not going to get this because I dislike these kinds of games, but with that said, I can see a lot of work went into this and I do hope it sells well.

  12. I dont want to rush you Josh but… you haven’t put up a video in a long time now. as i said i dont want to rush you but your videos are so awesome! if you have a lot to do right now i understand that. and BTW you are 10 times better than youtube! keep it up!
